Participation Resources from the East of England

In 2009, Local Authorities from the East of England came together as part of a three year programme of support funded by the DCSF. The aim of the programme was to develop an improvement framework for children and young people’s participation. Nine authorities took part in two workshops exploring an outcomes based evaluation process for participation. Key issues were using common terminology, evidencing outcomes and sharing resources.

Below is a list of resources that can be accessed online through the accompanying links.

Recruitment and Selection

A selection of resources for involving children and young people in the recruitment process are hosted on the Suffolk County Council website. This includes the YIPPEE kitemark standards developed with funding from CWDC.

Cambridgeshire Children’s Fund  - Are You Listening and Are You Recruiting

Are You Listening  is a tried and tested toolkit that equips service providers with the skills, plans and fun ways of involving children in evaluating activities and services they are receiving. Are You Recruiting is a user friendly resource to help organisations and services involve children in the selection of staff for posts. Includes ways of involving children in developing a job specification, writing interview questions, mock interviews and more.

Hertfordshire Framework and participation toolkit

Set out the principles, definitions and best practice guidance for participation, consultation and involvement with young people. Go to the Herfordshire website to view their Participation Hub.

Essex Guidance and Flowchart

The Essex Guidance is a framework to develop the involvement of children, young people, their families and communities. It includes underpinning principles, standards for supporting measurement, ideas for good practice, and a self assessment planning tool. The Guidance Flowchart is for organisations who wish to consult with children and young people to explore the reasons and process for doing so and encourage good practice.

Essex Youth Opportunity and Youth Capital funds

Money is available to young people, through Essex County Council to fund and improve facilities, opportunities and projects for their local area. This is done through two funds which work together. More information about these two funds can be found on the Essex Connexions website.

Southend Voice and Influence Framework

Sets out some key aspects of good practice and includes a simple self assessment tool for organisations to examine how well they are doing. It considers areas of strength and areas for development across three strands: planning and organising, doing and delivering  and checking, reviewing and learning. You can download a copy from the Southend on Sea Borough Council website.
